Jeremy Horst, DDS, MS, PhD
Director of Clinical Innovation
CareQuest Innovation Partners
Dr. Horst completed his dental and research doctorates as the first combined DDS/PhD program trainee at the University of Washington (UW). After this he completed a residency in pediatric dentistry at UC San Francisco, and contributed to research in the Den Besten, Habelitz, and
Sali labs.
In his research he applies genome-wide analyses to the bacteria that cause dental caries, to discover drugs and design diagnostics. His automated analyses rediscovered that a form of vitamin B decreases acid production by caries bacteria, and sprouted many other leads. His computational analyses have also led to discoveries of genetic mechanisms for: drug resistance for infectious diseases, biomineralization (bone and tooth development), and craniofacial birth defects. He also invented OraViz, a cloud-computing 3D dental imaging technology using equipment already in most dental clinics.
Dr. Horst recently chaired a committee to develop recommendations for the off-label use of silver diamine fluoride to stop dental caries. He currently is serving as director of clinical innovation at CareQuest Innovation Partners. In this role, Dr. Horst investigates areas of health and the oral health industry ripe for transformative investment. He supports dental providers as they test and implement new clinical practices designed to make care safer and more effective, particularly for those marginalized by the current health care system.
